THE ROYAL AUSTRALIAN NAVAL COLLEGE

INTRODUCTION

This publication lists the names of all entrants to the Royal Australian Naval College from 1913 to 1985 inclusive by class of entry.  It represents a consolidation of the first part, which covered 1913 to 1962 inclusive, and a supplementary part that covered the period 1963 to 1985 inclusive.  The period 1913 to 1985 spans the period when the RANC was an academic institution, which functions migrated to the Australian Defence Force Academy in 1986.  A second volume lists all entrants from 1913 to 1985 in alphabetical order.

The academic structure and training programs of the RANC changed numerous times during its history and readers seeking detailed information are directed to “A History of the Royal Australian Naval College” by F.B. Eldridge (Georgian House, Melbourne, 1949), and “Work Hard Play Hard” by LCDR I.J. Cunningham (AGPS 1988, ISBN 0 644 08303 4).

COMMANDING OFFICERS

The Commanding Officer of the RAN College when it opened at Osborne House in Geelong in 1913 was Captain B.M. Chambers, RN, and the college continued to be commanded by an officer of captain’s rank both in Geelong and at Jervis Bay until 1931 when it relocated to Flinders Naval Depot (HMAS CERBERUS) and became a lodger unit under the overall command of the Captain Superintendent of Training. As a lodger unit, the Executive Officer of the College was directly responsible to the Commanding Officer of HMAS CERBERUS.  In 1943 the command of CERBERUS was upgraded to Commodore rank with the title Commodore Superintendent of Training.  In 1943, Captain C.C. Baldwin RAN became the first RANC graduate to command the College.  In 1958 the College returned to HMAS CRESWELL at Jervis Bay and the command of RANC was once again designated as Captain.

PRINCIPAL ACADEMICS

The RANC was both a Naval training institution and an academic institution. Non-Naval education was overseen by a senior academic, whose title changed several times over the years, but whose function remained principally to manage the academic education of the cadet midshipmen and (later) midshipmen under training.

KING’S AND QUEEN’S MEDALLISTS

The King’s Medal was awarded by the Sovereign to the graduating Cadet Midshipman who, during his period of training, exhibited the most gentleman-like bearing and good influence among his fellow Cadet Midshipmen.  It was awarded during the reigns of HM King George V, Edward VIII and George VI.  Upon the accession of HM Queen Elizabeth II in 1952 the name was changed to The Queen’s Medal.

  • The year shown is the year when the appointment was made, the term of office generally running for the following twelve months. From 1915 to 1925 two Chief Cadet Captains were appointed. In cases where a vacancy occurred, a replacement was appointed, and various changes in training patterns led to variations in appointments.
