Dear members,
The following message has been received from the son of the late Captain Richard Arundel RAN Ret’d:
It is with heavy hearts that we invite you to the funeral of our father Captain Richard Arundel on Thursday 23 October at 2pm (Qld time).
His career started when he was just 13 years old as a Cadet-Midshipmen in the 1947 Flinders Year. During his service he held posts at HMAS Cerberus as Second in Command, Captain of HMAS Moreton, Australian Defense Attache in Paris & Berne. His military career is remembered in the Australian War Film Archive and Anzac Portal and he contributed to historical record- keeping at the Naval Historical Society of Australia.
After his retirement in 1987 he continued to advocate for his fellow serviceman to receive posthumous honors, and volunteering for multiple organisations to support others in the service community.
He was a devoted husband who loved his family, no matter the distance between them. He gave back to his community whenever he could and had a deep appreciation for culture from around the world. To those who knew him, he was a truly wonderful man — proud of his service and known for his warmth and quiet dignity.
In recognition of his friends, family and colleagues spread across the globe there are three ways to attend:
- in person at Drysdale’s Tewantin <https://www.drysdalefunerals.com.au/upcoming-funerals/3973n/>
- In person at a chapel at Belconnen where the funeral will be live-streamed and refreshments provided afterward (please RSVP if you intend to take this option)
- By joining the live-stream during the service or when convenient to you afterwards
The tide has turned, and the ship has sailed — but Richard’s memory remains anchored in our hearts.
Regards Simon Cullen
